The American River Trail (also known as the Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail) is a paved, primarily Class 1 trail, that begins in Sacramento at Discovery Park and follows the American River for 32 miles to the Folsom Dam. A map of the trail can be found at: http://arpf.org/pdf files/ARPmap.pdf
We will meet at Discovery Park in Sacramento at 9:45am. Parking is $7.00 cash per day, and is plentiful. Our meeting point is in the parking area west of where Interstate 5 crosses over the park. Departure is at 10:00am.
The pace will be relaxed and we will break for regroupings as needed. About 20 miles in we will pull off the trail for lunch at Jack’s Urban Eats in Gold River. Jack’s has outdoor dining that is very bike friendly. See the menu at http://jacksurbaneats.com
After lunch those wanting the shorter option can head back to Discovery Park. The remaining riders will continue on the trail for another 12 miles to Folsom Lake, which includes a climb of about 450 feet up to the dam. Bathrooms and water are available there. After regrouping we will head back down the trail to Discovery Park.
For those who might not want to make the return ride, there is a recent spur addition to the trail that provides a great connection to the historic town of Folsom. There is light rail service from there back to Sacramento. It is a little over an hour trip on the Sacramento Regional Transit District’s light rail system. Their website indicates they are bike friendly.
