Meet at 9:00am in Yountville at the Vine Trail parking area, California Dr and Solano Ave. We will take the Vine Trail north to Madison Ave and turn right, turn left on Yount St, continue on Yount Mill Rd, turn right on Hwy 29, and stop at Rutherford Rd to pick up riders who choose to start there.
We will continue up Hwy 29 and stop at the Clif Family Tasting Room to pick up additional riders who choose to start from there.
From there we will circle around downtown St Helena, by turning right on Charter Oak, left on Allison Ave, left on Pope St, right on Church, left on Hunt Ave, right on Railroad Ave, left on Fulton Lane, and right on Main St (Hwy 29). We will continue north on Hwy 29, cross Dunaweal Lane (where the Vine Trail to Calistoga begins), and make a left on Diamond Mountain Rd. At this point we will have covered 20 miles from the start.
The climb to the top of Diamond Mountain Rd is 3.4 miles and gets steeper as you go up. The first section, up to Patcheteau St, has a mild grade. Riders wanting to avoid a hard climb should turn back at this point.
The next section up to the Diamond Mountain Rd East Fork, is a hard, but beautiful, climb through the forest. Again, riders should turn back at his point to avoid the hardest climb.
The last section is VERY STEEP. The road is narrow, has lots of switchbacks, and the paving is not as good as the paving on the lower sections. You will be rewarded at the top with spectacular views of the Diamond Mountain Vineyard.
FYI, I did the ride from Yountville to the top of Diamond Mountain Rd in 1 hour and 53 minutes. The distance was 23.4 miles with 2,083 feet of climbing. I rested 15 minutes, then rode back to Yountville in 1 hour and 36 minutes. Total elapsed time was 3 hours and 29 minutes.
The club will provide free lunch at the Clif Family Tasting Room.
